In one of my articles, Can I Eat Boiled Plantain During White Fasting?, I explained what white fasting is all about, list of food to eat during white fasting, the spiritual and health benefits associated with white fasting and how to end it properly.
White fasting originated from the stories of Daniel in the Bible and it is tailored to meet the spiritual needs of those who really desire a deeper and intimate walk with God. It is based on Daniel’s spiritual and dietary experiences in the book of prophet Daniel Chapters 1 and 10.
According to Wikipedia, the aim of engaging in white fasting is to refrain from eating what was described in the book of prophet Daniel as “royal foods” which included meat, wine and processed foods. The focus was only on vegetables(in some translations, pulses is used instead of vegetables) and water.
In this post, I will provide answers on how to do white fasting and achieve results incase you are at cross-roads of how to go about it.
Relax and read on.
How to do white fasting
There are no laid down rules as to how the fasting must go but I have provided a guide that would be of great help so that your fasting will be worthwhile. Follow the steps below;
1. Identify the motive behind the fast
White fasting is really a time of spiritual connection with God and should be spent praying and studying the word of God though food, most times is probably one of the first things that come to mind once white fasting is mentioned or recommended.
Asking yourself, how do I grow in my walk with the Lord?, how can I have a more deeper and intimate relationship with God? So if you are doing white fasting because you want to lose weight, then that is the wrong motive. Your main focus should be on how to gain a higher spirituality and a deeper relationship with God.
2. Avoid distractions
Stay away from anything that could be a distraction to you during the period of fasting.
3. Create time and pray
Pray at least thrice a day, in the morning, midday and in the evening. If you look back in the book of Daniel, it was recorded in the scriptures that Daniel sought the Lord 3 times a day and also carried out his work diligently.
4. Be specific in your prayer requests
Remember that particular need that made you embark on this spiritual exercise, whether it is a health condition, an emotional issue or you are in a spiritual bondage. Present it to God in prayer.
5. Choose the appropriate Bible verses
Search for scriptures in the Bible that support your intentions and pray with these scriptures daily.
6. Meditate on God’s word
Spend time in prayer and meditate on God’s word. You can choose to spend ;
- 5 minutes in praise and worship
- 15 minutes in studying God’s word with your devotional
- 15 minutes in prayer with the scriptures.
You can always adjust to the time that works for you but remain committed to it and make sure you don’t break it.
7. Consume only plant-based food
Change your diet and consume only plant-based food like vegetables, legumes, fruits, whole grains, nuts and seeds, natural oils, herbs, spices and water.
“In those days, I Daniel was morning three full weeks. I ate no pleasant food, no meat or wine came into my mouth, nor did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled” – Daniel 10:2-3
8. Carry out your work diligently
The fact that you are on white fasting does not mean that you will lie on your back, make excuses because you notice you have a little less energy than normal or become sluggish. Look to perform your duties with excellence.
Daniel wanted to prove to the king that he can still look better and stronger with the change in diet and also perform his duties well while seeking the Lord. The king discovered that Daniel’s wisdom/knowledge and that of his friends were 10 times higher than the rest of the workers in the king’s palace. So set goals for yourself during the period of fasting and pursue excellence in what you do.
One interesting thing about white fasting is that it makes you disciplined spiritually. But don’t be hard on yourself if you mess up one day or be found wanting in one area or the other. God is looking at your heart so your willingness to get it right is better than perfection.
It is recommended that you consult your health care professional before undertaking any extreme fasting especially if you have an underlying health condition. Do well to discuss with your doctor also if you are pregnant or a nursing mother before going on a fast.
Remember it is a fast that you can embark on whenever you feel like so if you are looking to deepen your spirituality and intimacy with God as well as make healthier food choices, I recommend white fasting to you.
